DEFENCE SECRETARY GIVES BACKING TO LONDON RALLY 4 HEROES PLAN

TWO LOCAL MPs SUPPORT NEW MOTORSPORT EVENT

The Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond, MP for Runnymede and Weybridge, has given his official backing to the new London Rally 4 Heroes motoring event that will take place in April running over military roads in the Aldershot area and with ceremonial start and finish events at Brooklands.

"I am delighted that the MOD will be able to support the London Rally 4 Heroes in 2013. The MOD's estate accounts for 1% of the entire landmass of the UK, and provides a perfect environment for a dynamic and exhilarating event like rally-driving. Brooklands, in my constituency, has been home to both British motor sport, and some of the great names in aviation, including Hawker, Sopwith and Vickers. Its links to both motor-sport and Defence make it a perfect starting point for what promises to be a superb event in support of Help for Heroes."

Sir Gerald Howarth, the MP for Aldershot , has also given his support to the new London Rally 4 Heroes which will bring top flight rally cars and teams to the Brooklands and Aldershot areas.
"I am delighted to hear of this exciting initiative"said Sir Gerald. "Aldershot is becoming synonymous with military motorsport and this event would be a great one for the Spring calendar as well as a chance to raise money for an excellent cause."

The London Rally 4 Heroes will have a ceremonial start at Brooklands, the birthplace of British motorsport on Friday 19 April. The competitive speed stages will cover 60 miles of Military roads in and around the Aldershot area during Saturday 20 April. Up to 100 cars are expected to enter this new event which is designed to grow to join the National Championship in three years time.

Spectator stages will be organised so that enthusiasts can get close-up views of the cars in action.

Cars competing on the rally will be "sponsored" by friends and colleagues for every mile they complete on the event to generate funds for a substantial donation to the Help 4 Heroes charity that helps the rehabilitation of wounded soldiers. Local organisations and businesses are being encouraged to sponsor the stages to enhance the donation to be made by the London Rally. A souvenir programme will be published with part of the proceeds also going to the charity
